My Journey to Feng Shui: Why our Spaces Matter

Long before I understand what Feng Shui was or knew anything about its principles, I was aware of how strongly I responded to the spaces around me. I recall being in spaces, even at a very early age, that made me feel the urge to flee...and flee I did! My first memory of feeling fear in a space was in kindergarten. We had to eat our lunch on the gym floor, surrounded by everyone. The feeling was overwhelming, and I escaped to the sandbox outside, where I ate my lunch in peace and solitude. At four years old, this was a big deal!

I also remember the spaces where I felt safe and comfortable - particularly the home my mother nurtured so well, sitting around my grandmother's kitchen table having tea, and wandering and discovering the outdoors..

There were many experiences like this. I didn't have the words to describe them at the time, but I understood I was particularly sensitive to my surroundings. Looking back, I can see how that sensitivity eventually influenced some of my life choices and ultimately led me to Feng Shui.

Much of my working life has been in the outdoors - working on a farm, tree planting, and eventually gardening and landscaping. Being outdoors has always provided me with moments of solitude, peace, inspiration, and clarity.

About 30 years ago, while running my gardening business, I discovered Feng Shui and learned about a workshop taking place near me. I was fascinated and I wanted to know more. I reached out to the teacher of that workshop more than once and she eventually created a mentorship program which I excitedly became a part of.

I began incorporating Feng Shui principles into the garden work I was already doing. A few years later, I learned of a Feng Shui School in California offering classes and certification virtually. I was amongst the first group of students who graduated from that virtual program in 2014 which gave me the confidence to begin offering Feng Shui consultations and workshops.

Looking back, I realize that what I instinctively felt as a child is something I now understand much more deeply: our surroundings affect us.

I chose the name Evolving Spaces because I believe our relationship with our surroundings is constantly changing and evolving, just as we are. Feng Shui has given me a way to understand that relationship and, more importantly, a way to help others create environments that feel supportive, balanced and harmonious.

My journey with Feng Shui continues to evolve, just as our spaces and our lives do. What began as an instinctive awareness of my surroundings has become something I now have the privilege of sharing with others. My hope is to help people become more aware of how their homes, gardens, and work spaces make them feel, and discover how even small changes can create a greater sense of balance, connection and joy.
